Convert broad experience into a sharp market-ready story. Easier to understand, easier to remember, easier to recommend.

OutcomePowerful value proposition + clear professional narrative
Career Positioning visual showing unique value, market needs and ideal roles

High-level summary

  • Translates a long career into a single defensible specialism.
  • Gives recruiters and hiring managers a reason to fight for you internally.

Outputs the client receives

  • Positioning statement
  • Proof points and differentiators
  • Key messages for CV and LinkedIn
  • Interview story framework
  • Stronger market differentiation

Career OS™ principle

The market does not buy a career history. It buys relevance, evidence and confidence in the problem you can solve.

Who this stage is for

  • Technical leaders whose CV reads like a job description, not a proposition
  • Senior STEM professionals applying for stretch roles for the first time
  • Engineering managers competing against candidates with sharper narratives
  • Specialists pivoting sector (e.g. automotive → clean energy, defence → advanced manufacturing)
  • Academics translating research credibility into commercial language

Why this stage matters

Without sharp positioning, every downstream asset is forced to do positioning's job badly. Recruiters and hiring managers fill the gap with their own assumptions — usually a smaller role than you deserve.

Cost of skipping it

  • Being shortlisted at one level below your real capability
  • Losing offers to candidates with weaker experience but clearer messaging
  • Spending interviews defending your background instead of selling future value

In depth · Positioning

Positioning Strategy defines how the market should understand your value. Senior STEM professionals are rarely rejected because they lack experience — they are rejected because their value is not positioned clearly enough.

What is Career Positioning Strategy?

It turns your background, experience and capability into a clear professional proposition that answers one central question: why should this employer choose you for this level of role, now?

Why STEM professionals get stuck here

Technical careers are built through competence and delivery. That works inside organisations where people see the work. It does not automatically work in the external market — recruiters, hiring managers and AI screening systems only see the message you present.

Many technical professionals describe what they were responsible for, but not what they are known for, what value they create, or what senior problem they solve.

Common mistakes in technical career positioning

The most common mistakes include:

  • Trying to appeal to too many roles at once
  • Using broad phrases such as "experienced engineer" or "strong leader"
  • Leading with technical detail before business relevance
  • Hiding leadership impact inside project descriptions
  • Failing to show scale, complexity or commercial consequence
  • Positioning as a doer when the role requires strategic leadership
  • Writing for peers instead of decision-makers

How Career OS™ handles this stage

Positioning is built around four questions:

  • Who are you in the market? — your professional category, level and leadership identity
  • What problems do you solve? — the business, technical and organisational problems you handle best
  • What proof supports the claim? — evidence from delivery, teams, budgets, programmes, savings, launches
  • What role should the market place you in next? — the logical next step based on capability, not previous titles

Example: engineering manager repositioning for senior leadership

Initial: "I am an experienced engineering manager with strong technical and people management skills."

Repositioned: "Engineering delivery leader with experience leading cross-functional teams, supplier networks and complex technical programmes from concept through launch, with a track record of improving delivery confidence, reducing risk and aligning engineering execution with business outcomes."

The second version gives the market a clearer reason to care.

Try this before your next application

Write a one-sentence positioning statement: "I help [type of organisation] solve [type of problem] by applying [capability] to deliver [measurable or strategic outcome]."

If the sentence feels vague, your positioning needs more work.

What proof should you collect?

Positioning is only convincing when backed by proof:

  • Programme size, budget, headcount or technical scope
  • Delivery outcomes, launches, milestones or recovery actions
  • Cost savings, efficiency gains, risk reductions, quality improvements
  • Stakeholder groups influenced
  • Supplier or cross-functional complexity
  • Leadership responsibilities and strategic trade-offs
  • Evidence of progression, trust and organisational impact
